CHANGING SOCIAL STUDIES:
What is going on in our schools?
When I grew up in Bruce SD, my grade school teacher was Mrs. Bombeck.
We learned the basics – readin’ – ‘riting – ‘rithmetic – (My spell checker is going berserk) J
I learned about George Washington, Abe Lincoln, and Thomas Jefferson – you know, the founding fathers.
I even learned how to invert the divisor and multiply using a chalkboard, just like my hero Glenn Beck.
We didn’t have any calculators or computers back then.
We had to think.
Now I hear on the news that the liberals want to remove some of these conservative personalities from the school textbooks.
UFF-DA !!
Everything I learned was from Mrs. Bombeck. If only our generation could duplicate her for today’s children. And Glenn Beck.

ReplyDeleteHey, you gotta cite your source - "I heard on the news . . ." won't cut it because people will think you are referring to the old news of the six conservatives advising the Texas State Board of Education {made up of ten Republican and five Democratic members) to remove biographies of, for example, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Stephan F Austin, Thurgood Marshall, and Cesar Chavez, from their state's school textbooks (Dallas Morning News, July 9, 2009).
In fact, in a later draft of the legislation, the Texas Board of Education proposed replacing those prominent personages with the likes of, for example, Newt Gingrich, Phyllis Schalfly, and Russ Limbaugh (I don't believe Glenn Beck was mentioned) (Houston Chronicle, August 20, 2009).

ReplyDeletePerhaps we just have a different definition of "liberal" and "conservative"?
I would see the six "conservatives," the Republican majority (2-1) on the Texas State Board, Newt Gingrich, Phyllis Schalfly, and Russ Limbaugh as "conservatives."
While, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Stephan F Austin, Thurgood Marshall, and Cesar Chavez, to me are "liberals" (if not, "radicals" [some in the sense of "going to the Root."])!
